The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, commonly known as WIC, is a federally funded program that provides nutrition assistance to low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and children up to age 5.
In California, WIC benefits include vouchers for healthy foods, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals to other health and social services. WIC can help families improve their overall health and well-being, and research has shown that WIC participation is associated with improved birth outcomes, reduced infant mortality, and improved child growth and development.
